Our Literate Boys: Literacy Project

‘Our Literate Boys’ programme is dedicated to the improvement of boys’ literacy skill sets, imploring them to focus on the exploration of literacy through a variety of formats. Using film, short stories, music, spoken word and art, participants will funnel the inspirational stimuli into creating their own series of texts based on the medium they studied in the session. The project finale is a themed exhibition - in partnership with a global business - that the participants organise and design collaboratively. They are left feeling more confident and capable in themselves as well as being equipped with a newfound or strengthened love of literacy, a deeper knowledge of the English GCSE requirements, and the skills needed for the job market. Although great for any student, the programme is particularly useful for those with borderline grades, helping boost boys up to a passing qualification they can be proud of.

How DID THE PROJECT Affect you?

Proud: "The exhibition made my family proud, they saw me putting my brain to good use; I felt proud of myself in comparison to what I was doing before; we were able to walk out with our heads high and our chest up. Even though people might think negatively about me, I know I’m different from the stereotypes"

Confidence: "It boosted my confidence - performing in front of the mayor of Hackney, teachers, friends, and family. I was so gassed at that time, I felt invincible; got to perform in front of the whole school, which is like 2,000 [sic]"

Privileged: "I felt privileged, I felt good. Especially for my little brother who doesn’t really listen that much. It made me a leader – if someone is doing something stupid, I won’t follow them.
